Dear valued supporters,

While Le Phare faced many challenges and transformations this year, you were there, once again, to show your solidarity and generosity to the 257 families that are going through the unfathomable every day dealing with their child’s illness.

Thanks to you, our dedicated teams have been able to do everything in their power to care for these children and support their families, providing them with guidance and comfort. What is more is that your exceptional commitment has allowed us to lay the foundation for an organizational metamorphosis that will allow Le Phare to share its expertise in community-based Pediatric Palliative Care throughout Quebec.

This period of change has brought about other changes, notably with a new modern visual identity that reflects our organization, as we contribute to raising awareness about the cause and our mission with the general public.

Despite the pandemic and labour shortage, our establishment has welcomed new patients needing respite care or symptom management care. In collaboration with our hospital partners, Le Phare offers an alternative to families referred to the organization, by proposing a flexible environment centred around each child’s particular needs.

In recruiting two new pediatricians specialized in pediatric palliative care and participating in numerous conferences and training sessions, we have been able to expand our reach and our expertise.

As we launch our 2022-2025 strategic plan under the leadership of a new management team and a board of directors that is more engaged than ever, we are ready for what the future may hold. What we do know is that the future is bright for Le Phare, as we reach new horizons in community-based pediatric palliative care.

TRIBUTE TO DR. LOUIS BEAUMIER

We would like to honor Dr. Louis Beaumier, who passed away on July 12, 2021. Dr. Beaumier was an exceptional man, known for his kind approach. He dedicated his career to saving lives and sharing his knowledge. Board member and committed donor, he carried out a very important advisory role on our Quality of Patient Care and Services Committee. His memory will remain engraved in the collective memory of everyone here at Le Phare.

NEW VISUAL IDENTITY

In September 2021, Le Phare unveiled its new and improved visual identity, created in collaboration with the internationally-renowned agency McCann, along with its new website. The logo represents everyone who gravitates within and around Le Phare’s mission – the children, families, staff, volunteers, donors and supportive community.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE CROSS

In December 2021, the Meritorious Service Cross (civil division) was awarded to Ms. Michèle Viau-Chagnon and Ms. Nicole Marcil-Gratton (posthumous), cofounders of Le Phare. This honourary distinction, awarded by the Governor General, Mary Simon, honours their achievements and social implication. They took part in community and social development in Quebec for 20 years, establishing the first pediatric palliative care facility in the province.

My first thought was of my friend Nicole Marcil-Gratton, who worked so hard to found the very first pediatric palliative care facility in Quebec and who we lost just over 4 years ago. I’m also reminded of all the families who were able to receive support and those who helped build this first care facility. They all deserve to receive this medal. This honour also goes out to all those who have carried out Le Phare’s mission on a daily basis for the past 15 years. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks to them, the mission that we hold so near and dear to our hearts will live on. »

The pediatric palliative care that we provide at Le Phare gives children and their families the care and support that they need throughout the entire span of the child’s life, including death and beyond. Samuel Albert’s story touched thousands of people in 2021.

What we accomplished thanks to your donations

• Free care provided to 182 children with a life-threatening condition across Quebec
• Free services offered to 257 families (respite, psychosocial support and bereavement follow-up)
• Support group for bereaved parents
• Psychosocial and artistic workshops for families
• Recruitment of a second social worker and a specialized educator

• Modernization of some equipment and the multisensory room
• 2911 hours of activities and complementary approaches (zootherapy, massage therapy, music therapy and Dr. Clown)
• 132 activities for the Cultivating Memory program
• Organization of special parties for children
• Enchanted mural by the artists Jessica Lauzon and Nadine Samuel

The Chamandy Foundation made a considerable donation of $150,000 over a 3-year period allowing us to share our expertise and develop our mission for the future of community-based pediatric palliative care in Quebec.
